Recap of the last weekend of February

Go directly to the March 2009 Calendar of Events.
Saturday, February 28, 2009 was a busy, busy day. There was so much going on that day.
I made it to two events. I had a nice time at both.

Battle@Blu
The Blu City Spaces had a game theme open-house event. We met Kerry Robinson of the St. Louis Cardinals and played baseball on Wii (TM).
Read more and check out more photos at St. Louis Events Examiner:Recap of Battle at Blu.

Trivia Night-Garden Style
The Young Friends of the Garden hosted it's first Trivia Night and fundraiser. A special thank to everyone who came out and supported the Missouri Botanical Garden. We had a blast and I am really proud of the fact that our 2 tables took 7th and 8th place out of 19! It was a great time.

Talk and Book Signing by the Honorable William L. Clay Sr.

This book signing will feature Clay's book The Jefferson Bank Confrontation: The Struggle for Civil Rights in St. Louis. In 1963, at the same time that Dr. King was leading the march on Washington to deliver his "I Have a Dream" speech, then Alderman Bill Clay ignited the modern civil rights struggle in St. Louis with the historic Jefferson Bank protests. That six-month struggle led to the integration of the bank and was the first major victory for African Americans struggling to gain equality in employment and public services in St. Louis. This book by Bill Clay is a provocative historical memoir that tells the untold true story of courage in the face of police intimidation, death threats and jail. It also chronicles the broad coalition of brave St. Louisans, both black and white, who came together in the struggle for justice and equality.

The George Washington Carver Exhibit at the Missouri History Museum

I finally had the chance to check out the Washington Carver Exhibit at the Missouri History Museum.

This very same exhibit was in Chicago at the Field Museum last summer. I really wanted to see this exhibit, but I missed it. I was either in Chicago before the exhibit or after it had left. Imagine my pleasant surprise when I noticed a banner announcing the exhibits arrival while I was enjoying one of the last Twilight Tuesdays concerts of the 2008 season. The George Washington Carver exhibit was soon coming to my town! How lucky I felt.

And lucky I was to see and experience this exhibit. The graphics, artifacts, and pictures all come together to narrate the biography of a great American Innovator and Missouri Native. I did not opt for the audio tour, but you can. The displays and few audio are perfectly support one another. And the exhibit is not too long, so you shouldn't get too tired. Carver's story is amazing and worth sharing with others. Check out my thoughts about the exhibit here.

From slave, to orphan, to school boy working a number of jobs to college professor and Green Innovator.

You only have a few more weeks to see this exhibit for yourself. After This Monday, March 1, 2009, the exhibit is traveling. It will be in Dallas, Texas, next.

January Events – Recap in Pictures

Go Directly to the January 2009 Events or February 2009 Events.

Thursday, January 8, The Missouri History Museum presented another fabulous installment of the Community Cinema Series. This time is was a screening of the documentary of Tulia, Texas. The heart-wrenching account of a town dealing with a drug crisis and a possible tainted drug enforcement officer dropped our jaws. The Panel Discussion following the screening was equally captivating. Panelists include Redditt Hudson of the ACLU and Linda Trest, reporter with the Gasconade County Republican.

Later, the audience was invited to hang out at The Royale and enjoy some specials and conversation.

***********

I didn’t attend the St. Louis Inaugural festivities because I was out-of-town, but Suite STL held it down. But her review of the City’s Gala was *ahem* not very flattering.

**********

Saturday, January 24 was a grand evening at the Chase Plaze Hotel.
Earlier that day Schnuck’s sponsored the St. Louis Food and Wine Experience.
I was just pulling back into town so I wasn’t able to make it, but I heard it was blast. Check out Metromix’s pics. In fact, I met some random woman at Bar Louie who OBVIOUSLY had a great time. But I did make it over to Café Eau to hear Griffin & the Gargoyles. Had a great time and as always – ended up on stage.

Sunday, Dec 14 - Attended the Lafayette Square Holiday Parlour Tour.
Cost: $0
We toured twelve beautiful historical homes in the Lafayette Park neighborhood. If you love history or architecture or housing design, then you would love house tours, this one especially. Later, we enjoyed a fabulous banquet of food and wine. See the special label for the Lafayette Square House Tour by Chaumette Winery of Ste. Genevieve, MO.Now this house tour cost $20 person. How did we enjoy all of this culture and fun for free? We volunteered with Fuel for the City to serve as docents for the tour. Fuel for the City is this city's most vivacious all-volunteer organization. Network, socialize, and serve. And membership is free. Join now.

At the Post-event banquet.

Some home owners dressed in period clothing.

Tuesday, Dec 16 - An elegant evening of Classical Music with a String Quartet of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and Soprano Marliss Hudson.

Thursday, Dec 18 - A Night to Remember at the New Roberts Brother Hotel

The Holiday party was spectacular and food and wine and cocktails poured. A truly beautiful evening complete with some elbow rubbing with local celebrities and policy-makers.
************
Saturday, Dec 20 - A Reggae-licious night with Mario Pascal and Roots Fusion at Meskereem Ethiopian Restaurant
Cost: $5
Live music is always good and I love their style - a reggae, Afro-caribbean, R&B fusion. Reminded me of Stevie Wonder, Doobie Brothers, and India.Arie all stewed together in a delicious spicy peanut butter soup. Umm-umm good. It really took me back to my youth. On my BioDad side of the family - he and my uncle performed music like this at the family house. Acoustic & bass guitars jamming, saxophones blowing, African dancing, and lots of love fatigue-clad happy-nappy dredlocked peoples. It was great. Check Mario Pascal & Roots Fusion out and download some free tunes. Also enjoying the show were songstresses COCOSOUL and Marlisa Hudson and photographer Lance O Thurman on their evenings off.
