Conversations in Black and White
In January 2010, the Missouri History Museum welcomes the special Exhibition RACE: Are We So Different? Organized by the Science Museum of Minnesota, the exhibition explores the science of human variation, the history of the idea of race and the contemporary experience of race and racism in the United States. In preparation for the exhibition, the Missouri History Museum, in conjunction with the St. Louis Beacon and KETC/Channel 9, will present a monthly series of programs addressing issues related to race in the region and nation-wide. While the programs will vary in format, each one promises to be thought provoking. For our first program, join us for an evening of thought-provoking theatre exploring assumptions and identity. Performed by the museum's Teens Make History actors, these vignettes address an array of topics, including a recent St. Louis Post-Dispatch article illustrated with an interracial couple kissing. Enjoy a DJ spinning in th background while your conversations are sparked by the scenes.

* Central Institute for the Deaf--Volunteers are needed to assist with organizing the library and the computer room. Computer skills not needed, but there will be some heavy lifting involved. (8 people)
* Family Resource Center--Help out at the second annual 5K Run/Walk in Tower Grove Park sponsored by FRC's Junior Advocacy Board. Lots of roles to play including timing the runners, distributing and collecting tags, working the registration table, monitoring water stations, etc. (8-10 people)
* GenNext--Join the United Way's young friends group for their volunteer project at the Food Bank in St. Charles. Almost 15 Million pounds of food are distributed from the food bank each year. With all that food, it's no wonder they need your help! NOTE: This project will take place from noon to 3:00 p.m.
* Hostelling International--Volunteers are needed at Hostelling International's Century Ride in Portage Des Sioux, MO as parking attendants, food helpers, rest stop supervisors, and registration helpers. Did you know that Portage Des Sioux is only 10 minutes from the Mills Mall?
* I Squared--Have fun in the garden with I Squared, the International Institute's young friends group. Join them as they prepare their University City garden for summer veggies.
Afterwards, all groups will join together for a BBQ in Tower Grove Park.

Garden Party Nights Begin
Missouri Botanical GardensCelebrate the Garden’s 150th anniversary at Garden Party Nights! Enjoy strolling the grounds in the summer evening, sample beverages from area wineries and microbreweries, and watch madonnari (street painters) create new artwork on the pavement each week. Children can have their faces painted, play with jugglers and magicians, and explore the Doris I. Schnuck Children’s Garden.
