Invitation Only: Receptions at the History Museum and Big Brothers Big Sisters

Go directly to the April 2009 Events or May 2009 Events Calendar.

I must admit, I really enjoy being out and about. Last night, Wednesday, April 22, 2009, was a perfect example as to why.

The Missouri History Museum held an Opening Reception for the Mary Lee Bendolph, Gee’s Bend Quilts, and Beyond Exhibition. Quilters and members of the Gee’s Bend, Alabama community were in attendance as the press and Museum Members were treated to a view of the exhibit and a chance to meet the quilters and the curator of the exhibit. The exhibit is open until September 13 and I was amazed at the color and work of the quilts on displays.

I also recommend checking out the supplemental activities for this exhibition. Now until Sunday, April 26, 2009, Quilters, by Molly Newman and Barbara Damashek, is a dynamic performance at the Missouri History Museum.

Here are some pictures from the Reception.

We were also treated to a performance. The ladies sang some spirituals.

Also that evening, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern Missouri hosted a special thank you reception for ‘Bigs’ (a big brother or sister mentor). I’ve been a volunteer with BBBS for nearly 6 years. If you would like to make a difference in a child’s life, then BBBS would love to help you make a new friend. Sign up today. Here are photos from the reception hosted at the BBBS Offices at the corner of Grand Ave and Olive Blvd.

Recap of the last weekend of February

Go directly to the March 2009 Calendar of Events.
Saturday, February 28, 2009 was a busy, busy day. There was so much going on that day.
I made it to two events. I had a nice time at both.

Battle@Blu
The Blu City Spaces had a game theme open-house event. We met Kerry Robinson of the St. Louis Cardinals and played baseball on Wii (TM).
Read more and check out more photos at St. Louis Events Examiner:Recap of Battle at Blu.

Trivia Night-Garden Style
The Young Friends of the Garden hosted it's first Trivia Night and fundraiser. A special thank to everyone who came out and supported the Missouri Botanical Garden. We had a blast and I am really proud of the fact that our 2 tables took 7th and 8th place out of 19! It was a great time.

A Classical Night at the Opera with Marlissa Hudson

Go directly to the December 2008 Events Calendar.

Who said classical music and opera were only for the certain audiences? Pish posh.
Tuesday, December 16, The Fête Society was treated to a wonderful exhibition of music and song presented by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s Community Partnership Program (SLSO-CP). The SLSO-CP presents nearly 300 free concerts each year throughout the city.

The string quartet, featuring Violinist Jooyeon Kong, Violinist Eva Kozma, Violist Jonathan Vinocour, and Cellist Sebastian Gingras were lovely. They accompanied the outstanding voice of our very own –Soprano Marlissa Hudson. Oh, how we wanted to get you out to see and hear them. Despite the weather and road conditions the house was packed – beautiful. The program included works from Wolf, Puccine, Respighi, and Verdi. It was an Italian Dream theme.

We also bumped into a local celebrity – Gilberto Pinela – of City TV’s Best of the STL Show. No doubt he recognized the talent of Miss Hudson as the best of the STL.

The Performers (L-R)
Joyeon Kong, Sebastian Gingras, Marlissa Hudson, Jonathan Vinocour, Eva Kozma

The Piper Palm House (Isn't it lovely? They do Sunday Brunch, too.)

Let me admit I had no idea that symphony and opera performances were being presented to the masses in style at Tower Grove Park. Piper Palm House hosts the weekly Symphony Tuesday s at Tower Grove Park. It’s a perfect date. The performances are only one to one and half hours; and afterwards you get to mix and mingle with the performers and enjoy wine and cheese – for free – in this lovely building. It is filled with various palm trees from around the world, which is why it is called the Palm House. I’ll be posting these free concerts on the upcoming calendars. And for those of you who say that you’re not a fan of classical music, I say nonsense. Many of us have been exposed to great classical music most of lives – subversively. Did you watch Looney Tunes as a child? Then you know classical music. So be sure to come out one of these Tuesdays. And don't be afraid of opera either. There is always an explanation before the piece and sometimes a written translation of the words in the program. Hey, if you can stand Anime, then opera is a walk in the park.

There are a lot of great programs being presented by the St. Louis Arts community; so stay abreast. Marlissa Hudson’s is listed on the sidebar under Culture and Arts Links. Also read about all of the buzz she’s creating – She was featured in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (which has been syndicated across the nation) and a video interview on Stl.com.

See you out and about soon.

Election Day in St. Louis

Election Day
6:30 am
Assigned Polling Location: Benton Park, St. Louis City

The lines were long, went out of the building, through the parking lot and out on the side walk around the front of the building. But they did move along fast. The whole thing only took about 45 minutes. There were plenty of poll workers so things went smoothly. Inside, where people voted, there were over a dozen voting stations for paper ballots and 5 or 6 machines.

6:45 am, a little more sunlight.

I was thinking...Why do we vote on Tuesday? And lo, Yahoo provides the answer. Why we vote on Tuesday... and other election fun facts.

And if you're still unsure of who or what to vote for, check out People, Policy, Planet's latest entry: VOTE for Science!

And look who was on hand to make sure everything was kosher...They were checking on people and making sure everyone brought what they needed before standing in line for naught.

And he granted me a quick video interview talking about the lines.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1mSKc8y5Cg

(I'm having some embed problems, so please click on the above link. Thanks. Also, I've submitted the video to "Video Your Vote"promoted by Tavis Smiley and created by PBS and YouTube.

UPDATE
11:40 am
The lines were gone, only campaign workers were outside. My guy from above told me the line disappeared at 7:30 am and was gone every since. So mid-day is the time to go vote.
5:40 pm
I drove by and there were no lines. No picture but the scene was just like the afternoon shot, except dark. Hopefully the votes from this polling place should have no delays for tonight's count.
