Go Directly to the November 2008 Events Calendar.The Connect With...month end with service. On Saturday, November 1, twenty volunteers from a number of local professional and social networking groups met on Pine Street to get dirty. The service project benefited, Stray Rescue - a local no-kill stray animal rehabilitation and service organization.

Thanks to the $1 million award from Zootoo, Stray Rescue was able to get this great and huge building. And we were all there to help with the landscaping. We pulled weedy vines, manicured the ivy -which was growing everywhere and going away, trimmed bushes, and took down a very nice juniper tree I was admiring. We swept the side walks of debris and fallen leaves. Upon departure, we we good and sweaty, but we got it all done...and under schedule, too.

At the end we learned more about Stray Rescue and their upcoming plans. If all goes well, then they should be able to move into this building the first of the year (2009). The demolition was recently completed and now construction proper can begin. This facility is a gazillion times larger than the existing ones in Lafayette Square or on Manchester. I got a chance to look over the plans -- it's gonna be nice: Dog Kennels as well as Cat Kennels (they don't have them now), an obedience training area, a nice lobby, and a Veterinary clinic area. I didn't get a chance to ask, but I hope that clinic will be open to private clients as well. It would be a great way to generate revenue for the organization and having a Downtown area Vet would be great for all of the pet owners in the City.

Later..the After-set, sponsored in part by Ray Hill's American Pilsner. Hats off to Dave, Scott, and Pamela for their preparation efforts for the BBQ after the service event. The BBQ was hosted on the patio of the Blu CitySpaces Condiminiums Downtown St. Louis. Good eats and great company. I am so glad I'm connected.

The lines were long, went out of the building, through the parking lot and out on the side walk around the front of the building. But they did move along fast. The whole thing only took about 45 minutes. There were plenty of poll workers so things went smoothly. Inside, where people voted, there were over a dozen voting stations for paper ballots and 5 or 6 machines.

The lines were gone, only campaign workers were outside. My guy from above told me the line disappeared at 7:30 am and was gone every since. So mid-day is the time to go vote.

I drove by and there were no lines. No picture but the scene was just like the afternoon shot, except dark. Hopefully the votes from this polling place should have no delays for tonight's count.

Why you should help:

1. It's a quick and dirty way to help a great organization. It's a short period of time. You get to move around, meet great people, and that warm fuzzy feeling inside.

2. Stray Rescue is the best non-profit, no-kill, grass-roots, community-organizer animal advocate group ever. They recently won a grant to get the building but they still need lots of volunteers and money to meet their mission of helping poor animals and making St. Louis a safe and healthy place for every person and animal.

3. Stray Rescue rehabilitates stray dogs and cats until they find a forever home. It is a no-kill shelter. They take the hard cases including very sick and injured animals and those abandoned by home foreclosures, taken by animal authorities, and affected by natural disasters.

4. Even if you're not a big animal lover, do it for the greater good. Getting stray and feral animals off of the streets is just good public health and public safety. Your assistance to Stray Rescue helps to minimize your contact with these animals.

5. Immediately after the volunteer opportunity, Blu CitySpaces will host a BBQ at their location at 210 N. 17th Street downtown. How many chances do you get to hang-out and eat well for free these days? C'mon.

Party Crashing - Art and Culture Style

Last Weekend - Sat October 18
We made some great new friends last weekend. We received an unexpected text inviting us to a home get-together. We knocked on the door and were greeted by the hosts only to discover that we knew no one else there! Embarrased at first, the host assured us it was okay to stay - since the text invitation was legitimate and the originator of the text was indeed a mutual friend - so all was good. I'm glad we stayed. It was great time . thank goodness for good manners and no arriving empty handed, plus I earned our keep my making caparhinas all evening.! Woo Hoo! In the meantime I think we met the Who's Who of St. Louis.
A big thank you to our hosts (Monica and Daryll) who were very gracious and prepared the most tasteful food I’ve had outside of my mother’s kitchen. Can’t wait to hang out again.

Grafton Rendezvous – last weekend (Sun Oct 19)
If you did not know the Riverfront of Grafton, along the banks of the Illinois River, is a most beautiful place. We went to the 'Rendezvous' and delighted in one beautiful autumn afternoon. The leaves hadn’t completely turned yet, but as always, the scenery was breathtaking. If you didn’t know, the east-side of the Metro area has some great wine shops, too. You should check them out. The Bald Eagles will be arriving soon.

I didn’t see many familiar faces as Missouri Botanical Garden's Young Friends Fest-of-Ale on Wed Oct 22. So I’ll tell all of you that missed a great time. The Garden is naturally beautiful so the atmosphere was ideal. The newest autumn beers and ales by AB were available for free sampling. I really like the new American Ale.
Plus, it was pretty much your last chance to stroll through the Garden and enjoy the final days of Niki. It is truly a beautiful sculpture exhibit.

Plus, we made some new friends, of course. The band, Griffin and the Gargoyles were a fun cover band playing a variety of popular songs from the 70’s to today. Things got heated up when the band broke out with BBD’s “Poison”. For those that know me, they know I love this song – and the video dances that accompany the song. Break it down, now! This was quickly followed by House of Pain’s “Jump Around” and “Shake Ya Tail Feather” by Nelly and Murphy Lee. And the topped it off with the quintessential Journey song, “Don’t Stop Believin’”. I’m sold. I really can't wait for the next event.

We received free tickets to the concert from the Beau’s job. We also attended the fancy Gala Dinner. We presented our tickets to several people asking for directions and we sat a table with The Grand Art Center’s Who’s Who, including its Marketing Director and Dr. Givens and wife, President of Harris Stowe State University. Dinner and conversation were lovely. As we filed into the concert at 8 pm, we started to think that maybe those tickets weren’t for dinner, just the concert. Still not sure. That was a mistaken crash, honest. But I recommend everyone check out a show at the Sheldon. It’s one the nation’s oldest and acoustically perfect theatres. Pkus, they have matinee shows for as little as $10. And Brian Stokes Mitchell's performance was lovely. He’s a Tony Award Winning Baritone and he sang a host of his favorite Broadway and off-Broadway songs. Simply, lovely.

I told you all I was gonna do it. Okay, I really have fantasies of being a flash mobber and this is my first crack at something like it. Participating was fun and great cardio-vascular exercise. See you next year for the 2009 Thrill the World Event.

The St. Louis Zoo needs volunteers for 2 Major Upcoming Events.

1. Zootini 2008 Stayin’ Alive presented by Macy’s is on Saturday, November 15, in The Living World Building. This sell-out Young Zoo Friends fundraiser features live entertainment, hors d'oeuvres, and themed cocktails.

This is a MUST BE THERE Fete Event. If you're not able to swing the ticket price, consider volunteering so you can check out the Best, Most fun event of Autumn for FREE!

Volunteers are needed for the 6 p.m. – 12 Midnight shift to assist with greeting, registration, bar-backing, and more.

2. U.S. Bank Wild Lights is the Zoo’s evening holiday event where guests can walk through the Zoo's holiday wonderland of spectacular light displays and go nose-to-beak with the birds at Penguin & Puffin Coast .

The event dates are weekends November 28 – 30, December 5 – 7, 12 – 14, and nightly December 19 – 23 and 26 – 30.

Volunteers are needed each night during the 5 – 9 p.m. shift to assist with the event.

You do not have to be a Zoo Volunteer to volunteer for these special events. Young Literati to host Friday Night Fright
Just in time for Halloween, St. Louis’ newest young professionals group is hosting a haunted evening in downtown’s Central Library. Friday Night Fright will feature best-selling mystery author Angie Fox, drinks, appetizers, music, tours and a literary scavenger hunt throughout the 100-year-old building.
Angie Fox will be on hand to discuss her debut novel, “The Accidental Demon Slayer,” and will sell and sign copies of the book. DJ Raven Fox will provide music while guests enjoy appetizers and cocktails. Other activities scheduled for the evening include tales of St. Louis’ scary past and a scavenger hunt where participants will be entered into a drawing to win prizes provided by local businesses.
Cost: $20 / $15 for Young Literati – Become a member of the Young Literati that night and get in free!
Guests will be able to tour the Library and hear haunting stories about St. Louis’s past. They might even hear about Central Library’s very own ghost. Proceeds from the event will go to the St. Louis Public Library Foundation, which supports the Library’s programs and services.
