Autumn 2010 Events

As you may noticed by the paucity of posts and updates, that I’m not maintaining the Fête Society like I once was. I graduated in May and since being hooded, I’ve been wearing my science hat more prominently. I decided that my science blogging would get my full attention.

Urban Science Adventures! © is my blog about urban ecology, conservation, and environmental education. I also talk about diversity and science education to broader audiences. It’s a perfect resources for teens and families who are interested in learning more about science in a friendly, fun, and engaging way.

SouthernPlaylisticEvolutionMusic is my newest science blog - Evolutionary Science remixed with phat beats. It’s a blog about evolution and sexual selection but I explain all of the scientific concepts through hip hop songs. I’m having a blast and folks are really responding to it. This site is definitely for adults because it’s almost always about sex and dating.

I’m not closing the Fête Society page or the email account, but I am officially suspending emails and weekly updates. However, I WILL maintain the Fête Society Twitter account and Facebook Fan page, and will continue to share interesting events that catch my attention via those tools.

Policing Black Activism
Join the Missouri History Museum for a discussion of how black activism has been historically treated by the authorities. Watch selections from the acclaimed documentary Eyes on the Prize II: A Nation of Law? (1968-1971), followed by a panel discussion with Civil Rights activist Percy Green; newspaper columnist and community organizer Jamala Rogers; and Norman Seay, Civil Rights activist and founding member of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in St. Louis. Dr. Sowande' Mustakeem of Washington University will moderate.
This program is part of a series of events in preparation for the exhibit RACE: Are We So Different?, opening in January 2010. Recap of Weekend Events of October 3.

The weather was cool, partly sunny, and there was a light breeze. It was autumn and it was beautiful – the perfect weekend to share experience all of the delicious tastes, sights, and sounds of Missouri.
The Taste of St. Louis and the St. Louis Wine Fest provided so many delicious treats for the palatte, but I was taken away by the Farm-themed events this weekend. It was a Farm-tastic weekend.

The 18th Annual “Best of Missouri Market” at the Missouri Botanical Garden featured several vendors – of food, wine, and handicrafts – all made by local vendors. There were over 100 Missouri food producers offering fresh produce, canned goods, delicious baked goods, and candy makers.

Conversations in Black and White
In January 2010, the Missouri History Museum welcomes the special Exhibition RACE: Are We So Different? Organized by the Science Museum of Minnesota, the exhibition explores the science of human variation, the history of the idea of race and the contemporary experience of race and racism in the United States. In preparation for the exhibition, the Missouri History Museum, in conjunction with the St. Louis Beacon and KETC/Channel 9, will present a monthly series of programs addressing issues related to race in the region and nation-wide. While the programs will vary in format, each one promises to be thought provoking. For our first program, join us for an evening of thought-provoking theatre exploring assumptions and identity. Performed by the museum's Teens Make History actors, these vignettes address an array of topics, including a recent St. Louis Post-Dispatch article illustrated with an interracial couple kissing. Enjoy a DJ spinning in th background while your conversations are sparked by the scenes.

This book signing will feature Clay's book The Jefferson Bank Confrontation: The Struggle for Civil Rights in St. Louis. In 1963, at the same time that Dr. King was leading the march on Washington to deliver his "I Have a Dream" speech, then Alderman Bill Clay ignited the modern civil rights struggle in St. Louis with the historic Jefferson Bank protests. That six-month struggle led to the integration of the bank and was the first major victory for African Americans struggling to gain equality in employment and public services in St. Louis. This book by Bill Clay is a provocative historical memoir that tells the untold true story of courage in the face of police intimidation, death threats and jail. Schlafly ALEympics
Schlafly, Mardi Gras St. Louis, and local bars and restaurants will host several feats of strength and agility - Coaster Tossing, Doubloons (a Mardi Gras-themed version of quarters) and Cup Stacking. The fun begins on January 8th and will continue for seven Thursdays leading up to the Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday, February 21st. After the parade, the Aleympic Finals will be held in Soulard to crown the Schlafly Aleympians! Gold medal winners in each “sport” will receive a year’s supply of Schlafly Beer.
